Present Simple
Form
The form is the same for l/we/you/they.
I work from 9-5.
They don't work full time.
Where do you work?
He/She/It: add -s or -es, and use does/doesn't in questions, negatives and short answers.
He lives in Paris.
He doesn't work at weekends.
Where does she live
Short answer
Do you live in Bristol? Yes, we do.
Does he have a car? No, he doesn't
Use
habits (actions that happen again and again)
I play football on Saturdays.
facts that are always true
My daughter has brown eyes.
states (facts that are true for a long time)
We live in a flat near the centre of town.
Examples
I work as a lifeguard on Sundays.
She doesn't go to school every day.
I have four cousins.
75% of British households own a car.
He works in a bank.

1 We often use adverbs of frequency with the Present Simple.

2 They go before the main verb but after the verb to be.
Peter always arrives late.

3 Sometimes and usually can also start or end sentences.
Sometimes we play cards.

I always start work at 9.00.
She's often tired in the evenings.
Sometimes we meet in the town centre.
We meet outside the cinema usually.

Use
activities that are happening now
Don't turn the TV off. I'm watching it.

Peter is a student, but he's working as a waiter during the holidays.
planned future arrangements
We're having lunch with Glenda tomorrow.
Examples
The radio is on, but I'm not listening to it.
She's reading a very good book at the moment.
We're living with friends until our new house is ready.
I'm meeting Rob at 1.00 outside the restaurant.
State verbs
2 Some state verbs can be used in the Present
Continuous.
think
I think you're right. (opinion)
We're thinking of going to the cinema. (activity)
have
She has a lot of money. (possession)
She's having a bad day. (activity)
Examples
The soup tastes awful.
I'm tasting the soup, to see if it needs more salt.
He weighs 65 kilos
He's weighing his bag, to see how heavy it is.
Present Simple and Present Continuous Passive
Form
Present Simple Passive
= am/is/are + past participle
All workers are paid monthly.
Service is not included in the bill.
Present Continuous Passive
= am/is/are + being + past participle
This road is being widened
Are you being served?
Use
The uses are the same in the passive as in the active.
My car is serviced every six months.
(habit)
Computers are used everywhere.
(fact that is always true)
Their house is being redecorated at the moment.
(activity happening now)
